Ablution and Prayer Guide

Ablution / Wadu

A Brief step-by-step procedure for performing Wadu (Ablution) is as follows:

Before making Wadu, you should make the intention that the Wadu is for the purpose of purifying yourself.
The Intention (Niyah) can be made in the heart silently to oneself.

Begin by saying:. Bismillahir-Rahmanhir-Rahim:

(1) Wash the hands up to the wrists, preferably three times.

(2) Rinse the mouth out three times.

(3) Carefully sniff water into the nose, blowing it out again with the left hand three times.

(4) Wash the face from the forehead to the chin and from ear to ear three times.

(5) Starting at the right side, wash the arm up to the elbow three times, and then do the same for the left arm.

(6) Using wet hands rub them over the head starting with the forehead, wiping backwards. Then with wet fingers, wipe the inside and outside of your ears.

(7) Finally, wash the feet up to the ankle three times, staring with your right foot.

Prayer Guide

Pray in the direction of the Qibla
Muslims, wherever they may be, are required to face towards the Ka'bah in Makkah to pray.

Prayer / Salah

Step One

Standing upright on clean ground or clean surface, you begin by making the intention, Niyah, to pray this (Fajr) Salat for the sake of Allah. Then, raising your hands to the level of your ears, with palms facing the front, say,

Allahu Akbar (Allah is the Greatest)

Step Two

Place the arms across the centre of your body, with the right resting on your left, and recite the opening Surah of the Qur'an, The Opening al-Fatihah

Bismillahir-Rahmanhir-Rahim
Al-Hamdu lillaahi Rabbil-alamin
Ar-Rahmanir-Rahim
Maliki yawmid-din
Iyyaka na'budu wa-iyyaka nasta`in
Ihdinas-siratal-mustaqim
Siratal-ladhina an'amta `alayhim
grayril Magabubi `alayhim
walad-dalin. Amin.

The second Surah, we have chosen is Surah 112,
The Purity; Al lkhlas

Bismillahir-Rahmanhir-Rahim
Qul huwa-`Allahu ahad
Allahus-Samad
Lam yalid wa-lam yulad
Wa-lam yakunlahu kufuwan ahad

Step Three

After this you say,

Allahu Akbar (Allah is the Greatest).

Now bow, with hands on your knees and with your back as straight as possible, repeat three times:

Subhana Rabbi al-Azim,
(Glory be to my Lord, the Almighty).

Step Four

Resuming the upright position with your hands by your sides, say:

Sami`a-Allahu liman hamidah; Rabbana wa lakal-hamd
(Allah hears the one who praises Him; Our Lord praise be to You)

Step Five

Then repeat;
Allahu Akbar (Allah is the Greatest).

From the standing position, prostrate yourself in a comfortable kneeling position, your forehead and nose touching the ground, the palms of your hands flat on the ground at the level of your head; your arms and elbows however, should not touch the floor. In this position say, three times:

Subhana Rabbi al-A`al (Glory be to my Lord, the most High).

Step Six

Then sitting upright say;
Allahu Akbar (Allah is the Greatest).

Sit back on your feet with your hands resting on the knee (it is also good to pray and ask Allah for mercy and forgiveness in this position).

Step seven

After a moment or two, repeat
Allahu Akbar (Allah is the Greatest).

Return to the sitting position and repeat as before, say three times

Subhana Rabbi al-A`al (Glory be to my Lord, the most High).

This completes one Rak'ak of the Salah. To carry on with the second Rak'ah, repeat the words;

Allahu Akbar (Allah is the Greatest)

Stand upright again and repeat steps two-seven

Step Two

Place the arms across the centre of your body, with the right resting on your left, and recite the opening Surah of the Qur'an, The Opening al-Fatihah

Bismillahir-Rahmanhir-Rahim
Al-Hamdu lillaahi Rabbil-alamin

(Allah hears the one who praises Him; Our Lord praise be to you).

Step Five

Allahu Akbar (Allah is the Greatest).

From the standing position, prostrate yourself in a comfortable kneeling position, your forehead and nose touching the ground, the palms of your hands flat on the ground at the level of your head; your arms and elbows however, should not touch the floor. In this position say, three times:

When you have returned to the sitting position, resting your hands on your knees, raising the index finger of your right hand, recite the following prayer, known as the Tashahhud

Was-Salahwatu Wat-Teyyibatu
As-salamu 'Alayka Ayyuhan-Nabiyyu
Wa Rahmatullahi Wa Barakatuhu

This is followed by the prayer known as Salah ala an Nabi prayers on the Prophet.

wa ala ali Ibrahim innaka
hamidun majid

Step Nine

Finally, while sitting, turn your head and looking towards your right shoulder, say;

As-Salamu alaykum (peace be upon you)

And turning your head to the left, and looking towards your left shoulder, say

As-Salamu alaykum (peace be upon you).

This final salam completes the requirements for the dawn (Fajr) Salah

Units of Prayer / Salah

Fajr (Dawn) two
Zuhr (Midday) four
Asr (Afternoon) four
Maghrib (Sunset) three
Isha (Night) four

Please note:

If you are performing one of the other four Salah, which necessitate more than two Rak'kahs, you should simply recite the Tashahhud after the first two Rak'kahs as normal, then resume the standing position with the words, Allahu Akbar and complete one or two more Rak'kahs, according to the Salah in question. Then end with the Tashahhud and Salah ala an-Nabi and make the final Salam.
