A.H
After Hijrah. The Hijrah signifies the beginning of the Islamic calendar, when the Prophet emigrated from Makkah to Madinah.

Adam (AS)
The first man created and a Prophet of Islam.

Adhan
Muslim call to prayer, using the human voice rather than a horn, bell or other instrument.

Ahad
One. When referring to Allah it means He has no comparison.

Ahadeeth
Saying and traditions of the Prophet.

Ahlul Bait
'The People of the House' - used to refer to the family of the Prophet.

Ahzab
'The Clans' Ahzab is used to describe the different tribes that fought the Muslims in the battle of the Trench (Battle of Khandaq) in 5 AH.

Ajal
The appointed time of death, this cannot be altered, in accordance with Allah's command.

Akhira
The Hereafter.

Al Arsh
The throne of Allah.

Al Asma ul Husna
The Ninety-Nine Beautiful Names of Allah.

Al Balad
The title of Surah 90 of the Holy Qur'an called 'The City'. The city here implies Makkah.

Al Fatiha
'The Opening Chapter' - another name for the Surah Hamd which is the first Surah in the Qur'an.

Al Furqan
This is another name given to the Holy Qur'an and means 'The Criterion' (between truth and falsehood).

Al Isra wal Miraj
The 'Night Journey' of the Prophet Muhammad (SAW) from Makkah to Jerusalem and then through the seven heavens.

Alim
A learned person, in Islam, a Scholar.

Allah
Derives from the word 'Ilah' which means 'the One deserving of all worship'. All of Allah's creations have been ordained to call him by this name.

Allahu Akbar
'Allah is the Greatest'.

Amir
Leader or commander.

Ansar
'Helpers'. The people of Madinah who embraced Islam, supported and helped the Muslim emigrants against the Pagan tribes who waged war against the Prophet (SAW).

Aqeeqah
A ceremony essentially consisting of two acts. Shaving the hair from the head of a newborn baby and the sacrifice of an animal.

Arafat
A plain north of Makkah. On the 9th of Duh Al-Hajjah, Muslims gather on this plain. Staying there from mid-day to sunset is the essence of Hajj.

AS
Alaika Salaam - peace be upon Him. Alaiki Salaam - peace be upon her. Alaikum Salaam - peace be upon them.

AS
Alaiha Salaam, (Peace be upon him)

Ashraf al- Muralseen
The most honoured of all the Prophets. One of the titles of the Prophet Muhammad (SAW).

Ashura
The tenth day of the first month (Muharram) of the Islamic calendar.

Asiya (AS)
the wife of Pharaoh during the time of the Prophet Musa, (Peace be upon him). Asiya (AS) is noted as being one of the four greatest created females.

Assalaamu' Alaikum
The greeting of the Muslims. It means 'Peace be on you'. The reply to this greeting is 'Wa'Alaikum'Salaam wa Rahmatul lahi wa Barakatuh' - this means 'And on you be the Peace and Mercy of Allah and His Blessing.

Awra
The parts of the body that are not supposed to be exposed to others, except spouses.

Ayah
Means a sign which leads or directs one to something important. Also, an individual verse of the Qur'an.
