Progress to date
‘The world is beautiful and verdant, and verily God, be He exalted, has made you his stewards in it and He sees how you acquit yourselves.’ (Sahih Muslim) The venue is Burnley’s Chai Centre. The room is packed with representatives from the Burnley mosques. The event is a consultation for perhaps the first ever Mosque Environmental Policy. The policy delivers the green message through the Islamic perspective, stating Qur’anic verses and Ahadith traditions as the source for caring for the Environment. Funded by North West Development Agency, through the Faiths4Change grants programme, LCM have produced a document and are in the process of consulting with mosques in Burnley and Preston. Speakers at the Burnley event, held on 10th June, included Annie Merry, Director of Faiths4Change and Nasrullah Anwar from LCM. The consultation was also attended by representatives from Burnley Borough Council, Lancashire County Council and Pennine Groundwork. Continuing the green theme, Nasrullah also did a presentation on Islam and the Environment at an interfaith event, ‘Faith and Climate Change’, held on June 15th in Great Harwood, Hyndburn.
