An anti-drugs educational package otherwise known as `Islamic Choices` was developed in 1999-2000 in partnership with Lancashire Constabulary and `Communicare` NHS to be delivered in the Madrassah sector in order to raise awareness of drugs misuse. This project was awarded a North West Challenge award due to its uniqueness. This project has continues to be delivered within Lancashire Madrasahs and many young people continue to benefit from it.
Aims of Lancashire Council of Mosques
To develop projects and support existing services in order to achieve appropriate drug prevention, education and treatment in Lancashire. · To monitor the implementation of Islamic Choices throughout the community. · To ensure service provision from drugs agencies are sensitive to Muslim needs and Muslim clients.
Objectives of Lancashire Council of Mosques
· Implementing the "CHOICES" package in all Madrassahs in the County · Membership of East Lancashire Drugs Reference Group & Lancashire Ethnic Minority Drugs Issues Group. · Developing a training package for Mosque leaders on issues concerning drugs misuse. Delivering regular lectures on drug misuse.
Progress to date
The project won the regional award for Tackling Drugs and Changing Lives 2007 and the project officer was a runner-up for the national prize.
